Standard Print replacing Google Cloud Print

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

What’s changing

Google has announced that the Cloud Print Service will be discontinued on December 31, 2020. A replacement solution has been implemented so that you can continue printing documents from G.J. Software 5.0. Here’s a summary of what has changed:

  • Google Cloud Print will stop functioning after December 31st.
  • A new Print option is available under Setup > System Variables > Printers.
  • Once selected documents will no longer be sent straight to the printer and users will be prompted to download and print the .PDF document.

Who’s impacted

All offices and users in all regions.

Additional details

Previously documents were sent from the G.J. Software to the Google Cloud Print service, which then sent the document to a printer of your choosing. Now you will be prompted to download the document as a .PDF file and then you will need to print the file through your computer’s print dialogue. This change will apply to the following functions:

  • Printing Job Progress, Supervisor’s Schedule, and Vendor Reports from the File menu in Construction Schedules.
  • Producing Change Orders from the Job menu.
  • Producing Job Orders from the Job menu.
  • Producing EoM Reports from the Manager menu.
  • Creating a Manual Journal for WIP Profit Adjustments from the Manager menu.
  • Making a Claim/Draw from the Accounting menu.

How does it work?

If documents are set to be printed and not emailed, those documents will be combined into a single .PDF file. A dialogue will then appear prompting the user to download the file, which they can then print from their native PC or Mac print dialogue.

Documents will continue to be generated and saved to the designated location in Google Drive, e.g. Job Orders will still be saved to Job Docs > Orders.

As some files take longer to combine than others. For example, 100 job orders will take longer to combine than 3 job orders. In instances like this, a To Do message will be generated for the user who initiated the print function to let them know when the document is ready to be printed.

If a Corporate or Master user initiates the print, they will need to check their To Do messages from either their Master or Corporate view.

Getting started

Masters: There is no master level setting for this feature.

Franchises: Make sure staff are able to connect to your office printers via their PC/Mac settings. Then navigate to Setup > System Variables > Printers and then select Standard (Ctrl + P).

Once you make the change to Standard (Ctrl +P) you will not be able to switch back to Cloud Print.

Connecting to printers

Printer setup varies depending on your operating system and individual printer. However, printers are typically managed by your computer settings. More information:

Printing from Google Chrome

If you do not have a default PDF viewer enabled on your computer, Google Chrome will open the document for you. You can then click the Print icon or press Ctrl + P on your keyboard to open the print dialogue.

If you have never printed from Chrome before you may not see your printer right away. Click the Destination field and select See more… and then choose the desired printer.
